yayy for christmas (and okami is awesome.)

Okay, so I'm back from my secret christmas vacation location. Which means that the regularly-scheduled lack of updates may now continue.

Anyway, it's sorta late, but merry christmas/happy holidays!

Over the break, I had rather limited internet/computer usage, so I derived much of my entertainment from the Wii. Although the games that my sister got for her birthday/christmas, Wii Fit, DDR, and Animal Crossing, were all rather fun and quite enjoyable, I realized once again how truly amazing Okami is. Let me take a minute to explain how much I love this game.

Okami strongly resembles the Legend of Zelda games, with its action/adventure/exploration/item-collection/dungeon-crawling gameplay. This is a good thing. Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess are, in my opinion, two of the best games ever made, and Okami is clearly influenced by the series. Fortunately, it isn't just an exact copy - the story is set in Japan, the characters and dialogue are witty, humorous, but never annoying like Animal Crossing, and the game manages to be happy and upbeat no matter how bad of a shape the world is in.

The art style is really nice, and really sets the mood for the rest of the game. Although the colors are vibrant and enjoyable during the daytime, things do get rather dark and hard to see at night or when you are in a city covered by a deep fog.

Of course, the whole usage of a brush to draw symbols to use your celestial powers gives the game a unique feel. My only complaint with the brush system is that it isn't until quite late in the game that you get many offensive brush abilities, and therefore spend a good half of the game relying on the normal slash. Even though boss battles manage to make good use of the random different techniques you learn over time, It'd be really neat if there was more opportunity to use them in normal battles.

The game manages to have enough variety to keep things interesting for many hours, and keeps introducing new play mechanics and twists. If you don't have it already, you should definitely get it!
